CHN Family Expo on August 5-8 2010 in Ontario, California. This was a wonderful event and we thank all of you that visited our booth and attended the workshop.

FREE ART LESSON

Warm and cool pumpkins

Grade K-5th

Supplies:

blue, yellow, red, orange, white paint (tempera)

cut out white paper pumpkins

paint brushes

glue stick

brown paper (for tendrils) optional

green paper (for leaves) optional

Cut out a pumpkin (large) out of white construction paper, the heavier the better.

Give each child a selection of colors on a paper plate.... warm and cool colors...

Warm: yellow, orange, white
Cool: red, blue, yellow (blue and yellow to make green, red and blue to make purple)

Mix colors (be careful to mix too much or it will become a messy brown) and start painting. I like to have each child paint one warm and one cool pumpkin each. Talk to the kids about warm and cool colors...

Let the paint dry.....

White waiting cut out tendrils out of the brown construction paper and some leaves out of the green paper to be put on the pumpkins when they are dry. I like to use a glue stick for this. Now is a good time to teach the kids about colors... the primary and secondary. If you struggle with this yourself just look it up online :)

These pumpkins can be any size and color.....and look wonderful when put together in a pumpkin patch...in a window, on a door or refrigerator...

Free Fun Flower project

Have some fun with your kids today! bring out some old magazines and cut out flower shapes in different sizes layering as you go. Stick a brad in the middle to hold all the layers together and crumble the petals upwards. Find some fun paper for background, leaves and stem.... that is all! You have a great art project teaching the kids about the different part of a flower, 3D art, layering and shapes.

Cityscape

Grade level: 1-5

Learning objective: Teaching students the difference between cityscape and landscape.

Supplies: 12x18 black construction paper

Oil pastels

Time: 1 Hr.

Type of lesson: Drawing

Standards: California Standards

Resources: Poster or picture of a landscape and cityscape.

Steps:

Start this lesson by showing your students a picture or poster of a landscape. Ask the questions, what do you see? Ask if they see color, shape, pattern? (some of the elements of art). Go on to tell them that this is called a landscape. A landscape is a painting/drawing with hills, fields, trees and flowers....it is quiet, soothing and calm.

Now you take out the poster/picture of a cityscape. Ask the question, what do you see? Your students will tell you they see houses, cars, trains, streets, bridges and buildings. They might already know the answer to your next question, if the first picture was of a landscape what might this be called? A cityscape.

What is the difference between a cityscape and landscape? You will have all the answers you need to this question. Make sure to explain the difference between the noisy, busy, cars honking cityscape with smells of food and smog.....and compare that to the sooting, calm and serene landscape.

We are now architects building some amazing skyscrapers and homes using our oil pastels. Not just one or two and make sure to show how the buildings can be behind or in front of one another (overlapping). Perhaps a doghouse in the front or a tree in the background. A nice crescent moon, stars and even fireworks will make this project a huge success for both little artists and teachers.

In the higher grades you can incorporate the use of bridges and emphasize more on the background.
